Best Accounting Software for Small Business in the UAE (2026)

Zoho Books, Xero or QuickBooks for a UAE small business? A recommendation by situation: no finance team, multi-currency, e-invoicing, or a free zone audit.

The Short Answer

For most small businesses in the UAE in 2026, Zoho Books is the best default: it is built for UAE VAT, it is typically the cheapest of the three serious options, and Zoho is itself an FTA-accredited e-invoicing service provider, which matters a great deal from 2027. Pick Xero instead if you sell in several currencies and rely on a lot of connected apps. Pick QuickBooks Online if you already know it from another country and want the least learning curve. All three handle UAE VAT returns. The differences are in cost, currencies, e-invoicing readiness, and how much help you need.

If you want a feature-by-feature review, we wrote one: Xero vs Zoho Books vs QuickBooks for UAE tech businesses. This page is the shorter version: which one for which situation.

If You Have No Finance Team

Choose Zoho Books. The UAE edition comes with the VAT return format the FTA expects, tax invoice templates that meet the requirements, and bank feeds for the main UAE banks. It is the tool where a founder with no accounting background is least likely to produce a wrong VAT return by accident. It also typically has the lowest monthly cost of the three, which matters when the business is small.

The one thing no software fixes: someone still has to categorise transactions correctly and reconcile the bank every month. Software makes that easier; it does not make it optional.

If You Invoice in Several Currencies

Choose Xero. Multi-currency in Xero is the most mature of the three: unrealised and realised FX gains and losses are tracked automatically, foreign currency bank accounts reconcile cleanly, and reporting in AED stays accurate when half your invoices are in USD. Zoho Books handles multi-currency too and is fine for one or two foreign currencies; Xero is the better choice when it is most of your business. (See invoicing in USD and paying in AED.)

If E-Invoicing Is Your Priority

Choose Zoho Books, and this is the reason the recommendation changed in 2026. UAE e-invoicing becomes mandatory from July 2027, and every business will need an Accredited Service Provider to transmit invoices. Zoho is on the FTA's accredited list itself, so a Zoho Books user has a direct route. Xero and QuickBooks users will connect through a separate accredited provider, which works, but it is an extra vendor and an extra step. (See UAE e-invoicing: what businesses need to do.)

Whatever you pick, check the FTA's accredited provider register yourself before committing, as the list changes.

If You Are in a Free Zone With an Audit Requirement

Any of the three will do, on one condition: use it properly from day one. IFZA, DMCC and JAFZA companies increasingly need financial statements or an audit for licence renewal or for the 0% tax status. Auditors work from a clean general ledger, not from a shoebox of invoices. The software choice matters far less than whether every transaction is in it and reconciled. A tidy Zoho Books file beats a neglected Xero file every time.

If You Already Know QuickBooks

Choose QuickBooks Online. It supports UAE VAT and AED, and the interface will be familiar if you used it in the US, UK or Canada. It is the most widely recognised of the three, so it is easy to find help. Its UAE-specific features are thinner than Zoho's, and its multi-currency is weaker than Xero's, so it is the right choice for familiarity rather than for capability.

What Not to Use

Excel. It has no audit trail, no bank feed, and no VAT return. It works until the first FTA query, which is exactly when it stops working. Free invoicing apps that are not accounting systems: fine for sending an invoice, useless for a VAT return or an audit. Software from another country with no UAE VAT support. If it cannot produce the FTA return format, you will be rebuilding it in a spreadsheet every quarter.
