The EmaraTax Portal Guide: A Step-by-Step for IT Professionals

The EmaraTax portal is the UAE Federal Tax Authority's (FTA) digital gateway for all tax-related transactions. This guide helps IT professionals navigate it efficiently.

Getting Started: Account Setup and Registration

Before you can file any returns or manage your tax affairs, you need to set up your EmaraTax account correctly.

Visit the EmaraTax Portal: Go to eservices.tax.gov.ae and click "Sign Up" to create a new account.

Provide Business Details: Enter your trade license number, business name, and contact information. Ensure all details match your official trade license exactly.

Identity Verification: Complete the identity verification process using UAE Pass or Emirates ID.

Link Your Tax Registration Number (TRN): If you already have a TRN from the old FTA portal, link it to your new EmaraTax account.

Two-Factor Authentication: Enable two-factor authentication for enhanced security.

VAT Compliance: Filing Returns on EmaraTax

For VAT-registered IT businesses, the EmaraTax portal is where you file your quarterly VAT returns.

Log In and Navigate to VAT: After logging in, select "VAT" from the tax type menu and choose "VAT Return" to begin filing.

Enter Output Tax (Sales): Report all taxable supplies made during the period, including standard-rated (5%), zero-rated, and exempt supplies.

Enter Input Tax (Purchases): Claim input tax credit on eligible business purchases and expenses. Ensure you have valid tax invoices for all claims.

Reconcile and Review: Cross-check your VAT return figures against your accounting records. Any discrepancies should be investigated before submission.

Submit and Pay: Once satisfied with the figures, submit the return and arrange payment of any VAT due before the deadline (typically the 28th of the month following the end of the tax period).

Corporate Tax: Registration and Compliance

Register for Corporate Tax: Navigate to "Corporate Tax" in the portal and complete the registration form. All businesses with a taxable period starting on or after 1 June 2023 must register.

Obtain Your Corporate Tax TRN: Upon successful registration, you will receive a Corporate Tax TRN.

Prepare Financial Statements: Ensure your financial statements are prepared in accordance with IFRS.

File Your Corporate Tax Return: Submit your Corporate Tax return within 9 months of your financial year-end.

Conclusion

The EmaraTax portal is a powerful tool for managing your UAE tax obligations efficiently. By understanding how to navigate its features, IT professionals can ensure timely compliance and avoid costly penalties.
